A Jackson attorney has been jailed after admitting he looted a $1 million estate.
Court documents indicate Richard McQuillan wrote checks of up to $200,000 each to himself from the estate of Robert T. Howard.
Jackson County Probate Judge Diane Rappleye had ordered McQuillan to account for the missing money. McQuillan told the court Wednesday he stole more than $900,000 and juggled money among a number of clients in 2007.
Rappleye found McQuillan in contempt of court and sentenced him to an immediate 90-day jail term.
Howard's probate file indicates he died in 2006 at the age of 84.
McQuillan could face embezzlement charges with penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
